Generation and utilization of funds
Generation of funds
Eco-surcharge: Eco-development surcharge collected from the visitors @Rs.10/- from nationals and @Rs.100/- from international visitors constitute the core operational fund of Periyar Foundation. The 12th meeting of the state level Eco-Development Co-ordination Committee (EDCC) held on 18th March 2004 gave the necessary Government sanction for the collection of eco-development surcharge. The collection started from 28th October,2004 onwards and during 2004-2005, the total amount collected was Rs.42,47,090/-, the collection during 2005-2006 was Rs.78,26,170/- and 2006-2007 it was Rs.90,86,450/-. After setting aside 10% has the trust fund of fixed deposit in the Government treasury, the rest of amount will be allocated as per the annual budget approved by the Government body.
Donation: The Foundation can receive donations from individuals, Institutions at home and abroad as per the privileging rules, with the concurrence of the Governing body.
Grants: Periyar Foundation receives grants from government for conducting specific assignments like conducting training for the other protected areas, for functioning as nodal agencies for conducting tiger census for the state, elephant census for all the elephant research of state of Kerala etc. Periyar Foundation has carried out such assignments entrusted to it successfully during 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
Voluntary contributions: Periyar Foundation can accept voluntary contributions from individuals and institutions as per the privileging rules. For providing advertising space for 2 park friendly hotels in Thekkady in website of Periyar Tiger Reserve, Periyar Foundation received Rs.40,000/- during 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
Projects and consultancies: Foundation has received projects from Government agencies such as Tourism Department for the improvement of the infrastructure for community based eco-tourism programmes, modernization of interpretation and for the several phases of expansion of Bamboo Grove as full fledged center for experiential learning. In addition support has been provided by Tourism Department for replacing the old boats with higher capacity and fuel efficient boats for operating in Periyar reservoir and actions are in progress. Also several projects relating to monitoring wildlife have been submitted to Government of India and other funding agencies. The Periyar Foundation received consultancies for preparation of management plans for other sanctuaries in the state and also conduct statewide training programmes.
Institutional charges: Foundation receives institutional charges 10 -15 % for the trainings as well as any other consultancies imparted for other institutions.
Sale of souvenirs: Foundation also has ventured into production and sale of souvenirs and publications to enhance the fund flow.
Utilization of Funds
Funds generated from eco-development surcharge, donations, voluntary contributions, grants, institutional charges and sale of souvenirs are utilized in the following manner.
10% - of the total fund flow is deposited as trust fund. Of the rest funds available with the Foundation;
25% - for administrative overhead expenditure
30% - improved PA management (including visitor management and Sabarimala
Pilgrimage management)
40% - Village eco-development
5% - Research and impact monitoring and trainings.
